Tree of my life, Death’s cruel foot has crushed thee down to thy hidden root naught shall restore thy glory fled Shall the blossom live when the tree is dead? Life of my life, Death’s bitter sword has severed us as a broken word Rent us in twain who are but one shall the flesh survive when the soul is gone? Licht meines Lebens, des Todes Mund blies dich aus zu verfrühter Stund‘. Nichts wird den Funken je wieder entflammen. Muss ich mich zum Leben im Dunkeln verdammen? Baum meines Lebens, des Todes Hand, hat dich entwurzelt in diesem Land nichts wird sich je wieder so stolz erheben, der Baum ist gefällt. Soll die Knospe da leben? Quell meines Lebens, des Todes Schwert hat uns zertrennt wie ein Wort ohne Wert, zerteilte in zwei die Einheit davor, soll Fleisch bestehen, das die Seele verlor?
